As per media accounts, an unidentified assailant approached the candidate from behind and fired multiple shots into the back of his head, discharging at least 15 rounds.

The local National Electoral Institute (INE) revealed that since last summer, 82 individuals associated with electoral activities in Mexico have lost their lives, with 34 of them being candidates for local office. Additionally, between 2023 and 2024, there have been 2,172 documented incidents of violence, including assaults, threats, and kidnappings.
