28-year-old Julie Ward was an enthusiastic amateur wildlife photographer from Bury St Edmunds, England. In February 1988, she embarked on an extended seven-month trip to Kenya.
She spent most of her time in the capital city of Nairobi, but in September, she set out on a journey to the Maasai Mara game reserve to capture photographs of the annual Great Wildebeest Migration. Tragically, she went missing on September 6th.
After reports of her disappearance reached home, her father, John Ward, hired an airplane to help find his daughter. During the search, Julie’s jeep was found in a gully, and next to it was her dismembered and burned body.
The initial theory put forward by Kenyan officials was that Julie had been eaten by a lion and struck by lightning. To this day, Julie Ward's case remains unsolved.
